MusicWorks FAQs
3. My son is 6 years old and diagnosed
with autism. He is currently enrolled at the local public school. How do
I find out what services are available for him?
The best way to find out what services
are available for your child is to check with your teacher, guidance counselor
and principal at your local school. Other community based resources can be
found on the Internet if you search under autism. Many of these organizations
provide useful links to community and government support agencies.
Music therapy is considered a related
service under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. When music
therapy is deemed necessary to assist a child in benefiting from his/her
special education, goals are documented on the Individual Education Plan
(IEP) as a related service intervention. Music therapy involvement can stimulate
attention and increase motivation to participate more fully in other aspects
of the educational setting.
